HELEN COOMBS

“I already feel more confident in my capabilities and feel better prepared for any nasty situations I might find myself in.”

Hello I have always thought I would want to make sure I was reasonably fit once I’d past 30 otherwise it can be a slippery slope as you get older, also my Dad used to be in the army so I grew up thinking it is important to be in good shape.

My Dad bought me up to to be the sort of person that doesn’t pick fights but isn’t afraid to defend myself when needed and not to be scared of a bit of physical pain- it”s pretty much always temporary!

My Dad also showed me a few of his ‘Army moves’ (didn’t go down well with my mum) when I was tiny so that I could get away from someone if I needed to and I wanted to learn more.

I think it is in my genes to be a little bit tougher than some girls- most of my uncles were also in the armed forces and some were keen Boxers growing up!

As I got older I wanted to try Boxing but the places local to me didn’t offer mixed classes and it didn’t appeal to me to just train with girls. The idea went on the back burner and so did fitness as I hadn’t found any sport that I enjoyed enough to really get in to.

I have always kept aware of all of the various situations you hear of in the news, where a women has been a victim, which has also led to me wanting to be able to defend myself if I was ever the unfortunate victim! Also I am a practical person and think things such as being able to defend yourself should be basic life skills so it seemed silly not to learn it.

I joined the gym again earlier this year and saw Krav Maga being advertised there so I signed up for the trial class programme.

I could tell at the first class that if I stuck at it my fitness would improve a lot and also that Krav Maga is something that I could do for a short period of time to learn some basic defence skills or If I enjoyed it I could do it for years and continue to learn and get more advanced. Each class, I went away having learned a move that could help me defend myself which makes it well worth attending.

The classes are really fun, aswell as knowing that I am getting stronger and fitter I really enjoy the sessions. My Intructor Garry Estherby is really nice, a great trainer yet not scary or intimidating, he pushes us to our best level but not too far for our current capabilities. Everyone in the class is also really nice, I’m already making friends in the class and feel comfortable training with all of them and everyone encourages each other and helps each other learn.

“I already feel more confident in my capabilities and feel better prepared for any nasty situations I might find myself in.”

I now train 3 times a week and unlike the gym, I class it as a hobby, not just something I ‘should do’.

I already feel more confident in my capabilities and feel better prepared for any nasty situations I might find myself in.

Krav Maga is definitely aimed at real life situations which is what I would possibly need it for, especially when I am alone in a vulnerable situation such as early/ late dog walks, being alone in a car park, or in the company of an unsavoury character.

I intend to carry on training as I really enjoy it. You’ve got to be a bit achy after some sessions (much like any type of exercise!) but I think it is worth the initial pain, for the long term gain and with the correct stretches, warm ups, protective gear etc it gets easier and easier.

I’m looking forward to learning much more and to being confident that I can defend myself against someone that is much bigger and stronger than I am.

See you at training!

Helen.
